How DTZ Listening Works

Hören is the first module of the written DTZ exam: about 25 minutes, 20 tasks, 4 parts. The main rule that determines the entire strategy: each recording plays exactly once. There is no rewind, pause, or repeat – just like in real life, when an announcement at the train station won't be repeated.

Before each recording, you are given a few seconds to read the question. These seconds are half the battle: if you know what you're looking for (time? place? price?), your ear will automatically pick out what's needed from the flow. Anyone who reads the question while the recording is playing loses both the question and the recording.

You need to answer immediately, as you go: there is no separate time to transfer answers within Hören. If you didn't hear it, choose any option and forget about it: an empty box guarantees zero, a guessed one is a chance for a point, and dwelling on the previous question costs you the next one.

Four Parts: What You Hear and What They Ask

1. Teil 1 – Short Messages and Announcements (4 tasks)

   Answering machine, supermarket announcement, train station message. One question with three options for each recording. Trap: the recording almost always contains words from the INCORRECT options too – you need to choose based on meaning, not on a recognized word.

2. Teil 2 – Radio Announcements (5 tasks)

   Advertisements, announcements, weather forecast, traffic information. The pace is slightly faster, with a 'radio' background. Questions are specific: when, where, how much does it cost. Practice numbers, days of the week, and time – these are what determine this part.

3. Teil 3 – Conversations Between People (8 tasks)

   Everyday dialogues: at the doctor's, with a neighbor, at a child's school, with a colleague. Two questions for some conversations, 'richtig/falsch' and multiple-choice formats. Here it's important to pay attention to WHO says what and how the conversation ENDS: a common trap is that one option is offered first, then they agree on another.

4. Teil 4 – Opinions on One Topic (3 tasks)

   Three people express their opinions on one topic (for example, 'internet for children'), your task is to match the speaker with the statement. The statements are paraphrased: no one will say it word for word. Listen to the entire position – 'for', 'against', 'for, but with a condition'.

Strategy and Typical Traps

Read the question before the recording, answer during the recording, never go back. These are three rules that replace 'good hearing'. Going back to a previous question is the most expensive mistake: it usually costs two points instead of one.

Negation trap: 'Der Termin ist NICHT am Montag' – and the options include 'am Montag'. Changed plans trap: first 'treffen wir uns um 15 Uhr?', then 'lieber um 16 Uhr' – the correct answer is the second one. Familiar words trap: the incorrect option often contains a word that was literally spoken, while the correct one is a synonym.

You need to practice in exam mode: one listening, no rewinding. Listening to podcasts 'in the background' is useful for language, but the exam skill – to grasp a specific fact on the first try – is built only on tasks in the DTZ format.

How to Prepare

The norm is 10–15 minutes of Hören tasks daily, not 2 hours once a week: the ear adapts to the pace of German speech only through regularity. Start with Teil 1 and 2 (short, specific), then add Teil 3 – it's the most extensive part of the exam (8 out of 20 tasks).
