What is expected of you in DTZ Sprechen Teil 2
Duration: 1–2 minutes (can be up to 3–4 minutes with expansion). Standard topics: family, work, shopping, free time, school, food, doctor.
Levels: A2 — simple picture description (“I see people in the park”); B1 — description + connection to one's own experience + opinion.
Main rule: to get B1, you cannot only describe. You need to move from the picture to your own life: “I see X. This reminds me of Y. I had Z.” This automatically earns points.
Universal Description Skeleton: 4 Steps
This pattern works for any picture in the DTZ exam. Only the specifics change.
Step 1: Einleitung (1 sentence)
State what is in the picture overall.
Step 2: Beschreibung (2–3 sentences)
Where things are located: foreground and background, left and right.
Step 3: Details + Vermutung (2–3 sentences)
What people are doing and your assumption about the situation.
Step 4: Eigene Erfahrung + Meinung (2–3 sentences) — the main thing for B1!
Connect the topic to yourself and express an opinion. This step takes almost as much time as the entire description — this is the transition from A2 to B1.

All 4 steps in one example
[Schritt 1] Auf dem Bild sehe ich eine Familie beim Essen.
[Schritt 2] Im Vordergrund sitzen zwei Eltern und drei Kinder an einem Tisch. Auf dem Tisch stehen Teller, Gläser und viel Essen. Im Hintergrund sieht man eine moderne Küche.
[Schritt 3] Die Familie isst zusammen. Alle sehen glücklich aus und sprechen miteinander. Vermutlich ist es ein Sonntagsmittagessen oder ein Familienfest.
[Schritt 4] Das erinnert mich an meine Familie. Bei uns ist es ähnlich, wir essen oft zusammen am Wochenende. Als ich Kind war, hat meine Mutter immer am Sonntag gekocht. Ich finde, dass gemeinsames Essen sehr wichtig ist, weil die Familie dann Zeit miteinander verbringt.

How much should I speak when describing a picture in the DTZ?
1–2 minutes, with an extension about your own experience — up to 3–4. The time itself is not important, but the transition from description to your own life: without the "Eigene Erfahrung + Meinung" step, you won't be assessed above A2.
What if I don't know the word for an object in the picture?
Don't be silent or get stuck: describe it with another word ("das Ding für …", "so etwas wie …") or simply skip the detail — coherent speech is assessed, not the completeness of the picture's inventory.
How does an A2 description differ from a B1 description?
A2 is simply a listing of what is visible. B1 is a description plus a connection to one's own experience and opinion: "Das erinnert mich an … Ich finde, dass …". Step 4 of the template is precisely the boundary between A2 and B1.
What picture topics are there in the DTZ?
Everyday topics: family, work, shopping, leisure, school, food, doctor. There are no exotic topics — the 4-step template covers any of them; only the specifics change.
